Don’t Leave a Dirty Filter in Your Heater

If you use a forced air heating system, be it a furnace or a heat pump, then you need to be sure to change your filter. It may not sound like that big of a deal, but failure to do so on a regular basis can result in some pretty serious issues. Fortunately, it’s a very simple thing to handle.

Now, you may think that it’s enough to leave your heating maintenance to a professional. It’s true that your filter will be changed during annual maintenance. However, you cannot leave it up to your professional just once a year to change the filter in your heater in Bolingbrook, IL.

Why Is Changing the Filter a Big Deal?

Because your furnace or heat pump has to force air through your system! Imagine blowing through a straw. When the straw is clear of blockages, it doesn’t take a whole lot of effort, does it? No imagine that that straw has the wrapper stuffed in it, or that your finger is blocking the other end partially. It’d be a lot harder to force air through that straw, right? This is the same concept as using a dirty filter, and it leads to a lot of problems.

  • Efficiency. The harder that your heater has to work to force air throughout your home, the more it is going to cost to do so. It really is just that simple. Spending a few dollars on a fresh filter every 1-3 months can save you a lot on your heating costs.
  • Air Quality. If you don’t keep a fresh air filter in your heating system, you are going to have trouble maintaining good indoor air quality in your home. Now, the purpose of the standard air filter is not really to keep your air quality high, but rather to protect the system. That being said, you will probably notice a decline in indoor air quality if that filter is not changed regularly.
